About Sonia
SONIA COPELAND BLOOM grew up in Sussex, but has spent
more of her career in London and Canterbury, where she now
lives. Her Irish father, Dr. John Copeland, was GP and surgeon in
Calcutta, India, and worked with the missionary Sister Teresa on
helping orphaned, sick children. Her mother was a talented golfer
who played for Sussex, won the Indian Ladies Championships and
subsequently worked for the Red Cross alongside her husband
when they moved to Swaziland when her father was appointed
by the Crown to become a Medical Officer in Swaziland. On
retirement they returned to their home in Sussex.
Sonia has two children, nutritionist Samantha Bloom BA (Hons),
DIP, CNM, MBANT of www.bloom-nutrition.co.uk and Dr Orlando
Bloom, BA (Hons), the Hollywood film actor.
Sonia, who decided to be a writer as a young child, trained, and
worked as an NUJ journalist on the Worthing Herald. She then
went to Spain to study Spanish at Seville University. She stayed on
in Madrid when offered a job working on an American magazine.
On returning to the UK she was an assistant editor for Vogue
magazine, before moving to the Central Office of Information
as an assistant editor of a Russian and Polish magazine for the
Foreign Office
